Rent Receipt Generator (Ontario)
Create a rent receipt that meets Ontario's rules: the rental unit address, every tenant's name, the amount and date of each payment, and what it was for. Landlords must give one free on request, and tenants use them for the Ontario Trillium Benefit.
An Ontario rent receipt must show, at a minimum, the address of the rental unit, the name of each tenant, the amount and date of each payment, and what each payment was for. A landlord must provide one free of charge whenever a tenant asks, and a former tenant can ask for up to 12 months after the tenancy ends.
Common uses for a rent receipt (ontario)
- Landlords answering a tenant's request for receipts
- Tenants' proof of rent for the Ontario Trillium Benefit
- Cash rent payments that need a record
- Annual receipts listing every month's payment

Rent (Ontario) receipts: what to get right
What Ontario law requires
Under section 109 of the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006 (opens in a new tab), a landlord must give a tenant or former tenant a receipt for rent, a rent deposit, arrears or any other amount paid, free of charge, when asked. A former tenant can ask for up to 12 months after the tenancy ends.
Ontario Regulation 516/06 (opens in a new tab) sets the minimum contents: the rental unit address, the tenant names, the amount and date of each payment, and what each payment was for. Refusing to give a receipt on request is an offence under the Act, and disputes go to the Landlord and Tenant Board.
One receipt or twelve
Either is fine. The regulation asks for the amount and date of each payment, so a single annual receipt that lists all twelve payments with their dates meets it. A receipt that only states a yearly total does not. Tenants usually ask in tax season: rent paid feeds the Ontario Trillium Benefit, and the CRA can ask for proof after the claim.
